The Green Bay Packers are emerging as a true Super Bowl contender in due time. After consecutive playoff appearances under Jordan Love, the organization took a huge swing by trading for Dallas Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons. It immediately elevated their profile and raised the profile of an excellent young team.
With elite talent at virtually every position on the field, Green Bay’s biggest question mark was the wide receiver core, mainly due to inexperience. Unfortunately, their young receiver room may have suffered a major hit in the form of their likely WR1, Jayden Reed.
What Happened to Jayden Reed?
On the first drive of the game, the Packers were in 2nd and long territory. Trying to take a big swing into the end zone, Love took a long shot down the right sideline. Even though Reed caught it for his first touch of the game, the play was called back for a penalty.
However, for Green Bay, a bigger problem was developing. Falling hard on his right shoulder, the talented wide receiver wasn’t getting up off the ground. As the training staff and medical team converged around him, it was clear things weren’t okay.

Already dealing with a Jones fracture coming into the game, this might have made the road incredibly difficult for Reed and the Packers offense as a whole. Taken off the field immediately, Reed could be seen walking back to the locker room.
At halftime, the Packers ruled out a return for Reed as they led by 14-3. After the Packers won 27-18, Matt LaFleur confirmed that Reed has suffered a significant injury.
“Packers WR Jayden Reed, ruled out tonight with a shoulder injury, has suffered a fractured collarbone, coach Matt LaFleur said,” wrote NFL insider Ian Rapoport. “He’s headed for Injured Reserve and out for the foreseeable future. They do expect him back this season.”
Rapoport also reported that the Packers expect Reed to miss six to eight weeks.
Coming into his third season, the youngster was slowly establishing himself as a top-tier wide receiver. Increasing his output in his sophomore season, Reed went from 793 to 857 yards.
Reed’s Injury’s Fantasy Impact
Despite spending a first-round pick on Matthew Golden, the Packers were back to their usual wide receiver rotation. Tonight, they started with Dontayvion Wicks and Romeo Doubs in two receiver sets with Jayden Reed occupying his usual slot role in three receiver sets.
Without Reed, one might think this would consolidate targets. That will likely not be the case. Golden appears to have already lost the starting job he had in Week 1 to Wicks. The rookie did not play a snap on the Packers’ opening drive until Reed exited the game.
With Reed out, expect Golden to feature more on the offense, along with Malik Heath. Sadly for fantasy managers, this will not increase the fantasy values of any other Packers, at least not immediately.
Things could always change down the line, but the only thing a Reed injury does is take the possibility of starting him out of the equation. Golden remains a hold. Doubs and Wicks are fringe rosterable players.
