Quarterback Justin Fields inked a two-year, $40 million contract with the New York Jets, proving the organization is confident in his ability to be the face of their franchise.
While Fields is yet to lead a team to a winning record for an entire season, he’s flashed serious amounts of potential through the first four campaigns of his NFL career. The 26-year-old tends to rely on his legs if unable to find a completely open look down the field, which the Jets will need to have him unlearn for serious success to arise.
One way to limit this habit is to ensure a group of strong playmakers surrounds him.
Could the Jets Save Jakobi Meyers From His Raiders Situation?
Outside of star wideout Garrett Wilson and dual-threat running back Breece Hall, Fields lacks reliable weapons heading into Week 1. This is where a trade for the Las Vegas Raiders’ disgruntled WR Jakobi Meyers could come in.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox predicts exactly that could happen, listing the Jets as a landing spot for Meyers.
“The reality is that Meyers, who is in a contract year, is likely nearing the end of his Las Vegas tenure. The Raiders just used a second-round pick on his likely replacement, Jack Bech,” Knox wrote. “There is no shortage of NFL teams that could afford to strengthen their receiving corps, which is a big reason why Meyers tops our [NFL trade block] board.”
Meyers requested a trade from the Raiders in late August because he and the front office were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension. He is entering the final year of a three-year, $33 million contract.

Despite this, Meyers recently told FOX News that his request was denied and that he intends to play in Week 1 against the New England Patriots.

“I asked, they said no,” Meyers said. “That’s where that stopped. I’m just going to keep doing my job until something shakes out either way. I don’t know which way it’s going to go, but I’ll be ready for whatever.”
This makes it rather obvious, as Knox pointed out, that his time in Las Vegas is coming to an end, and New York could be the primary beneficiary of this. Meyers recorded 87 receptions for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns in 15 appearances with the Raiders in 2024. He, along with Wilson and Hall, would create a reliable trio Fields can look to on a play-by-play basis.
