The Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (KEONICS) has invited tender for request for proposal (RFP) for the establishment of a technology park in Mangaluru, according to Manjula N, Secretary, Karnataka Department of Electronics, IT, BT and Science and Technology.

In an informal chat with media persons during her visit to Mangaluru on Friday, she said the proposed technology park would help boost the IT (information technology) ecosystem in the region.

It may be mentioned here that the recent cabinet meeting of the Karnataka government had approved the establishment of an IT park on the KEONICS land in Mangaluru.

KEONICS intends to develop the proposed commercial technology park on a 3.285-acre land situated along Blueberry Hills Road in Mangaluru on a DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer) basis under public private partnership model.

The tender document said that the site presents strong opportunity for IT/ITeS development in Mangaluru, offering sufficient land for office space development, as the city currently lacks a modern tech park. The main goal of this initiative is to enhance the region’s technological infrastructure, attracting diverse IT companies and promoting significant growth and job opportunities in the region. This influx of jobs is anticipated to significantly bolster the economic growth of the region, enhancing both local employment and overall prosperity.

IT ecosystem

Highlighting the growth of IT ecosystem beyond Bengaluru, Manjula said Mangaluru, Mysuru, Huballi-Dharwad, and Belagavi clusters are attracting investments in IT sector in Karnataka.

On her interaction with representatives from IT ecosystem in coastal Karnataka, she said some nano GCCs (global capability centres) have already set up their units in Mangaluru-Udupi region.

Mentioning that there is potential for the establishment of a data centre park in Mangaluru, she said the requirements such as power, water and other infrastructure will have to be studied in this regard. A feasibility study will be done in this matter, she added.

Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of KDEM, who was present on the occasion, said that many companies have set up their base in Mangaluru in the past few years. One of the foreign companies has set up its research and development centre in Mangaluru.

Rohith Bhat, Lead Industry Anchor of KDEM, Mangaluru cluster, said that there is increase in enquiries for office space in IT sector in the region. He attributed this to the availability of IT infrastructure and talent pool in the region.
