General

Heritage and politics

The 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram deserves attention beyond political rhetoric. It should ideally be an opportunity to reaffirm inclusive unity — celebrating the song’s historical significance, remembering the sacrifices tied to it, and encouraging respect across communities. Using it as a wedge undermines its legacy and the very idea of national solidarity.

It is essential to reclaim Vande Mataram from political contestation and restore it as a shared cultural asset that belongs to all Indians.

Anya Sai Iyer,

Bengaluru

Our founding fathers would never have imagined the song to spark debate. Yet, even in controversy, its call to love the motherland reminds us of our shared heritage and enduring unity.

T.S. Karthik,

Chennai
