American billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday has indicated of his willingness to launch satellite services soon, saying he was ‘looking forward to serving India with Starlink’.
His statement on X came after Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Minister of Communications met with Lauren Dreyer, Vice President, Starlink earlier in the day, along with the senior leadership team of Starlink, to discuss strengthening satellite-powered digital connectivity across India.
“Satcom (satellite communication) in India will accelerate digital inclusion and contribute to broader socio-economic development…satellite technology will play a pivotal role in extending connectivity to the most remote parts of the country and strengthening Internet access to every citizen in rural and hard-to-reach regions, ensuring that digital inclusion accelerates broader development,” Scindia said.
During the discussions, both sides explored how satellite-based last-mile access can accelerate digital inclusion and contribute to broader socio-economic development.
Scindia reiterated that as India drives forward its digital transformation, partnerships with global Satcom innovators such as Starlink can complement national efforts to bridge the digital divide.
On Monday, Starlink’s website had shortly flashed a residential plan of ₹8,600 monthly for unlimited data, along with a 30-day trial pack to test the connection, and the hardware set up was priced at ₹34,000 as one-time payment.
However, the company later clarified that there was a configuration glitch in its system that made dummy test data visible and the numbers “do not reflect what the cost of Starlink service will be in India”.
Dreyer had posted on X saying: “The Starlink India website is not live, service pricing for customers in India has not yet been announced, and we are not taking orders from customers in India…The glitch was quickly fixed. We’re eager to connect the people of India with Starlink’s high-speed Internet, and our teams are focused on obtaining final government approvals to turn service [and the website] on.”
