As per the report by Fox News, police officers, including plainclothes Vatican Gendarmerie personnel, intervened immediately, removing the man from the basilica. However, it’s now certain whether he was arrested or charged.
The desecration reportedly reached Pope Leo XIV, who was said to be “shocked” by the incident, New York Post reported.
Vatican officials, including spokesman Matteo Bruni, later indicated that the man may have serious mental health issues. “This is an episode of a person with a serious mental disability who has been detained by the Vatican Police and then placed at the disposal of the Italian authorities,” Bruni told ANSA.
This is not the first time such an incident has happened. As per the Catholic News Agency, a man desecrated the altar by climbing on top of it and throwing six candelabras that were on the altar to the ground in February. In June 2023, a nude Polish man leapt onto the same altar with the words “Save children of Ukraine” scrawled on his back.
St. Peter’s Basilica is considered one of the most sacred sites in the Roman Catholic Church. It draws millions of visitors annually. The Altar of Confession, situated directly above St. Peter’s tomb, holds immense spiritual significance as it is reserved for the Pope’s masses and key liturgical ceremonies.
