Dozens of countries allow in-country mail-in voting for some or all voters, according to data collected by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social on Monday that the U.S. is “the only Country in the World that uses Mail-In Voting.”
“All others gave it up because of the MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD ENCOUNTERED,” Trump said.
Why It Matters
Trump has previously stated that mail-in ballots and voting machines are vulnerable to election fraud, despite little evidence of it happening in the U.S.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Senior Spokesperson Marcus W. Robinson previously told Newsweek that Trump’s promise is “legally baseless” and said it “threatens the voting rights of millions of Americans, including military families and voters abroad.”
What To Know
A total of 12 countries, including Canada, Germany, and South Korea, allow all voters to vote by mail in their elections, according to the International IDEA. A total of 22 countries allow some voters to vote by mail in their elections. Eligibility varies by nation. Some examples of people who may be able to access mail-in voting in these nations include individuals who reside in remote areas, individuals in custody and hospitalized individuals.
Trump said he plans to sign an executive order to “help bring HONESTY to the 2026 Midterm Elections.”
“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election,” Trump said.
Experts told Newsweek that Trump cannot change federal election rules by executive order.
What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump, on Truth Social: “I, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WILL FIGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BACK TO OUR ELECTIONS. THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX, USING VOTING MACHINES THAT ARE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL DISASTER, MUST END, NOW!!! REMEMBER, WITHOUT FAIR AND HONEST ELECTIONS, AND STRONG AND POWERFUL BORDERS, YOU DON’T HAVE EVEN A SEMBLANCE OF A COUNTRY.”
Richard Briffault, a professor at Columbia Law School, previously told Newsweek: “Any changes would have to be made by Congress. And even Congress can’t change how states run state elections.”
What Happens Next
Trump has yet to sign an executive order to ban mail-in ballots or voting machines.
