NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs Trying To ‘Move Money Around’ To Chase Top Available Free Agent

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still keeping tabs on free agent forward Jack Roslovic, one of the more notable names left on the market. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently reported the Leafs are “trying to move money around,” hoping to create the room needed to make the deal happen.

Roslovic, 28, finished last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he matched a career-best 22 goals. That showing helped solidify his place among the top remaining free agents. According to Friedman, five or six teams are still believed to be in the running.

Elliotte Friedman: Another player we talked about for Toronto was Jack Roslovic; there’s still a few teams looking at him; I’ve heard 5 or 6 [teams]; we know with Toronto, they’re trying to move money around – 32 Thoughts Podcast (8/3)

Toronto has been connected to Roslovic for a while now. Friedman first floated the possibility in early July, and it’s easy to understand why. Roslovic brings flexibility; he can play both wing and center and has history with Auston Matthews from their U.S. National Team Development Program days. His offensive upside fits the Leafs’ top nine nicely.

Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts:

“One other guy I think the #LeafsForever are in on is Jack Roslovic. And it makes sense to me because he has a history with Auston Matthews. They played together at the USNDT. So I could see this connection”

He’s reportedly looking for a multi-year contract worth around $3 million annually. It’s a reasonable ask, but it currently exceeds Toronto’s available cap space, which sits around $1.9 million. To make room, the Leafs would likely have to move a player, possibly Calle Jarnkrok or David Kampf.

So far, though, there’s been no indication that a trade is close. The Daily Faceoff noted a lack of recent chatter around those names, suggesting the front office might need to pick up the pace if they want to keep Roslovic in play heading into training camp.

While the Leafs have made some offseason moves like re-signing Nick Robertson and adding pieces like Matias Maccelli and Dakota Joshua, they don’t appear done just yet. The club is reportedly still looking to add one more difference-maker.

Time, however, isn’t on Toronto’s side. With other teams circling, the Leafs will need to act quickly if they still hope to bring Roslovic aboard. Without a timely move to free up space, they may lose out on a forward who could have offered real value at a manageable cost.
