The San Jose Sharks may be languishing towards the bottom end of the Pacific Division, but alternate captain Macklin Celebrini is going above and beyond to change the course of the team. The rookie forward single-handedly secured the team’s overtime victory against the Utah Mammoth at the SAP Center on Tuesday.
But besides the team’s crucial success, Celebrini also marked a personal milestone second to none. With every game, the 19-year-old is inching closer to the NHL greats.
Macklin Celebrini’s Three-Goal Wonder Secures His Place Among Legends
From the moment the puck dropped in San Jose on Tuesday night, Celebrini looked poised to win. The 19-year-old alternate captain gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 1:47 in the first period with an assist from Phillip Kurashev. He continued to channel his infinite hockey wisdom to stretch the lead to 2-0 at 5:58, taking a lead pass from Collin Graf.
At the other end, there was the formidable J.J. Peterka. Peterka scored the maiden goal for the Mammoth at 9:25 of the third period, and ultimately tied it 2-2 at 17:09. The mood was tense at the Sharks’ home arena, as the game stretched into overtime. However, Celebrini rose to the occasion to save the day.
The 19-year-old propelled the team to victory by scoring a power play goal 2:58 into overtime. In an exceptional display of hockey might, Celebrini scored a hat-trick for the second time this season. The Mammoth had overpowered the Sharks entirely in the third period if not for Celebrini.
With that, not only did the Sharks recover from a two-game losing streak, but Celebrini has become the fourth teenager in the history of the NHL to score 30 points in the first 20 games of the season. Celebrini joins legends Wayne Gretzky, who has achieved this feat twice in his NHL career, and Pittsburgh Penguins icons Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby.

He has also become the first in the history of the San Jose Sharks to accumulate 30 points and 13 goals in the first 20 games of the season. Celebrini is only 19, and it goes without saying that the forward will likely have better days ahead. As Celebrini marches forward to win games for San Jose, the NHL community should expect many more such records in the future.
The Sharks will return to their home arena to meet the formidable Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 20. The Kings are coming off a 2-1 loss on the road against the Washington Capitals.
