British tennis star Emma Raducanu received an outpouring of support from fans after she was forced to take a medical timeout during her quarterfinal match at the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open.

Battling oppressive conditions with temperatures soaring above 104°F (40°C), Raducanu struggled through a straight set win against Greece’s Maria Sakkari.

The Washington D.C. summer showed no mercy during Raducanu’s 6-4, 7-5 victory. Midway through the second set, the 22-year-old was visibly distressed by the extreme heat and required medical attention.

Support flooded in from tennis fans on X, with many fans expressing frustration with tournament organizers and those criticizing Raducanu’s decision to pause play. One user highlighted the severity of the conditions, posting:

“Those criticizing Emma for taking a medical timeout today in the second set don’t know what it’s like to play in these horrible weather conditions for over two hours. It’s over 100 degrees (40 Celsius) and baking, not to mention the humidity. Absolute respect to all the players today.”

Another fan wrote, “No player should be allowed to play in these temperatures, just like in Cincinnati. Tour should adopt AO’s heat warnings.”

The Australian Open’s Extreme Heat Policy, which includes suspending matches or extending breaks when the heat stress index reaches a certain threshold, was widely praised during this discussion as a potential model.

Spectators who attended the event in person also chimed in, pointing out how difficult it was to even sit through matches under the blazing sun. “And those courts radiate the heat. Being in the stands is difficult. Can’t imagine playing three sets in it,” one user wrote.

Another added, “I could barely sit through entire matches this week without taking a break from the sun so I can’t even imagine being a player in this heat. People have to remember athletes are humans too.”

“Sports shouldn’t be played in such conditions. They are humans. They are there to entertain people,” a user wrote.

Some fans also addressed the apparent double standards in how different players are treated in similar situations.

“I’m sure they’re not criticizing Medvedev for taking a time out for this exact reason at roughly the same time,” one person pointed out, referencing Daniil Medvedev’s similar struggle in the heat during his three-set loss in the Citi DC Open quarterfinals, where he also took an MTO during the match.

Others defended Raducanu’s integrity in the face of criticism, with one fan remarking, “People could find a way to criticize her for absolutely anything.”
