During the trip, he will take part in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in the country’s largest city and economic centre.

This year’s summit, held under the theme ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,’ is the fourth consecutive G20 gathering hosted in the Global South.

G20 leaders are gathering in Johannesburg this weekend, but the United States will be absent after former President Donald Trump announced a boycott, citing his controversial and widely disputed claims that South Africa is mistreating its white Afrikaner community.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is also skipping the summit, continuing his reduced schedule of overseas travel.

    General PM Modi’s G20 Agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to speak across all three main sessions, which will focus on inclusive economic growth, climate-related challenges, and the opportunities and risks posed by artificial intelligence.

The Ministry of External Affairs has said that he will outline India’s positions on each of these themes.

PM Modi is also scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines and will participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by Pretoria.

Describing the gathering as a significant milestone, PM Modi noted before his departure that this is the first G20 summit to take place on African soil.

He highlighted that during India’s presidency in 2023, the African Union was inducted as a permanent G20 member, a move New Delhi had strongly championed.

PM Modi said the summit provides an important forum to discuss pressing global issues under South Africa’s theme, “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.”

He added that India’s interventions would reflect the country’s guiding philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, One Earth, One Family, One Future.

The three working sessions will deal with:

    • Inclusive and sustainable growth, trade, development finance and global debt challengesBuilding resilience, climate change, disaster preparedness, energy transitions and global food systemsEnsuring a fair future, critical minerals, decent work standards and the governance of artificial intelligence

India views the African Union’s entry into the G20, achieved during PM Modi’s presidency, as one of the most notable recent reforms in the grouping.
