Report: DK Metcalf’s Suspension Upheld By NFL

DK Metcalf appealed his two-game suspension for an altercation with a fan during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. His appeal was unsuccessful. The NFL upheld the suspension without pay, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Because of the category of this suspension, the appeal was heard directly by an appeals officer whom Roger Goodell appointed.

The appeals officer was veteran NFL coach Chris Palmer, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He was a former coach of the Cleveland Browns, who the Steelers play on Sunday.

The two-game suspension for #Steelers WR DK Metcalf has been upheld by an appeals officer jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA.

We don’t have details of the appeals hearing yet, but it’s reasonable to assume the NFL didn’t find Metcalf’s explanation compelling enough to reduce the suspension. His main argument was reportedly the fact that this particular fan had a history of provoking him at games, including one last year.

Metcalf will not be available for the rest of the regular season. Fortunately, this may not be a huge deal for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The division could already belong to Pittsburgh by the time the Steelers kick off against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. If that’s the case, then Metcalf may have rested for the next two games, anyway.

On the other hand, if the Baltimore Ravens beat the Green Bay Packers—possibly with their No. 3 QB starting—and the Steelers lose to the Browns on the road, they could have a big issue on their hands. A 91 percent chance of making the playoffs can turn on them in a hurry if they have to beat the Ravens in a win-and-in Week 18 game without Metcalf.

Beyond the implications on the field this season, there are some significant ramifications for Metcalf and his future with the Steelers. His contract contained language to void certain guarantees in the event of a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

The Steelers now have an out if they decide Metcalf doesn’t fit into the future of their team. As long as he produces and behaves, that shouldn’t come into play. But it’s a dangerous position to be in for Metcalf for a team that is about to hit an inevitable rebuild with a new quarterback in the near future. He’d better hope the rebuild is quick to justify his high cost.

Part of the reason for moving on from George Pickens was to circumvent maturity issues. Therefore, it’s a bad look to void guarantees before the first year of the contract expires.

Adam Schefter told ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike this morning that the league viewed DK Metcalf’s actions as unprecedented. They gave him an unprecedented consequence, and now he has no choice but to live with it.

Metcalf was placed on the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner list, so Pittsburgh can fill his roster spot until he returns. They just tried out a dozen players, so one of them could potentially sign in the coming days.
