RPGamer has been covering RPGs since 1998, with the current version of the site launched in 2018. Due to the wholesale change in our back-end and systems only certain content created from 2018 onwards has been carried over to our new site. However, all of our older content can still be found at archive.rpgamer.com.

Charmander, just too iconic.
I loved my Squirtle back in the day…
I REALLY loved my Fennekin some time after that…
But the one that tops them all was my little round bird with the leafy bowtie, Rowlet. You don’t get much cuter than a spherical ball of soft cuteness that already comes dressed for formal occasions.
I love the Fire-type starters, and a few of them are even favorite Pokemon of mine. It all goes back to Charmander, though. As starers by themselves, I like Litten and Torchic more, but I still love Charizard even after all of these years. 🙂
Looks like I’m going off the board here, since I really like Turtwig (though more for Torterra).
Froaki is probably the starter that I like most across all three evolutions … but I’m with FeatherHoof here. Rowlet is a literal ball of feathers – that beats everything else! The final evolution is also pretty cool, but that’s irrelevant.
QoTW: My favorite starter Pokemon were the L25 Espeon and L26 Umbreon that the protagonist starts with in Pokemon Colosseum for the GameCube. Pokemon Colosseum had two starters because all fights were two-on-two battles, and it was awesome. Also, Espeon and Umbreon combine “cute kitty” and “kickass battler” into a magnificent total package.
Honorable mention goes to the adorable and versatile Eevee, as a starter in Pokemon XD for the GameCube and in Let’s Go Eevee.
After hearing Kelly’s testimony, I decided to try Ring Fit Adventure for the Switch, and got far more of a workout than I ever expected. The ring exercises wear out my arms, and the game gets physically exhausting very quickly – in a good way, of course.
Ring Fit Adventure for RPG of the Year 2019! It may not be the RPG we want, but it’s the RPG we need and deserve.
