While an MoU was recently signed between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited of India and United Aircraft Corporation of Russia for production of civil commuter aircraft SJ100 in India, Indian airlines have started showing interest in the aircraft. UAC is hopeful that they will soon be starting the production in India with localised elements.

Speaking at the Dubai Air Show, UAC CEO Vadim Badekha told CNN-News18, “Indian airlines have expressed interest in operating this aircraft. HAL will decide on logistics and marketing in the Indian market.”
He added that UAC is replacing imported components with Russian-made ones and completing certifications for the updated programme.
The Indian aviation sector is expected to require over 200 jets for regional connectivity and an additional 350 aircraft for routes across the Indian Ocean region, making the SJ100 a potential key player. The aircraft is being seen as a game-changer for short-haul operations under India’s UDAN scheme.
Under the HAL-UAC arrangement, HAL has the rights to manufacture the SJ100 for domestic customers. “We aim to follow the approach used in combat aircraft production, incorporating Indian-designed elements into this commercial platform,” Badekha said.
The SJ100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body regional jet. Over 200 units have been produced and are currently operated by more than 16 airlines worldwide. Its entry into the Indian market could significantly boost short-haul connectivity and regional air travel.
