In a heart-wrenching incident, a man and woman reportedly attempted self-immolation near Khiching College in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday. According to sources, the woman succumbed to her injuries, while the man is currently battling for life.
As per the eyewitnesses, both individuals poured petrol on themselves and set themselves ablaze near a field adjacent to the college.
Locals, including the woman’s brother, rushed to the scene and managed to rescue them from the fire in a critical condition. They were immediately taken to Sukruli hospital, where the woman was declared dead by doctors.
The man has been shifted to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment.
Sources said the man sustained 70 per cent burn injuries in the self-immolation bid, and his condition is stated to be critical. Both victims are said to be residents of Khiching village.
While the exact reason behind the suicide attempt remains unknown, it is suspected to be related to a love affair.
Meanwhile, police have begun an investigation to ascertain the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.
