Sony raises PlayStation 5 price in US amid ongoing ‘challenging economic environment’

Newsbrief: Sony Interactive Entertainment has warned would-be customers in the United States that the price of its entire PlayStation 5 console lineup is about to go up due to ongoing economic challenges.

In a short post to the PlayStation Blog today, SIE global marketing vice president Isabelle Tomatis revealed new regional pricing for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro, with each console seeing a $50 price hike in the United States, and only in the United States. Tomatis notes that this is a US-exclusive pricing change, with prices in other markets remaining unchanged at this time.

“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” explains the straightforward post from Tomatis. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting on August 21.”

This move increases the price of the standard PlayStation 5 from $499.99 to $549.99, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition from $449.99 to $499.99, and the PlayStation 5 Pro from $699.99 to a hefty $749.00. The changes are notably limited to console hardware, with the post specifically noting that pricing for PlayStation 5 accessories will remain unchanged.
