This year, far fewer student visas have reportedly been given out. Yet, in the QS World University Rankings 2025, the U.S. has 36 universities in the top 100, significantly outperforming any other country. | Photo: iStock/ Getty Images
Indian students who aspire to study abroad are at a crossroads after some measures from the Trump administration such as increased scrutiny for issuing student visas. Specifically, students applying for F (student), M (vocational), and J (exchange visitor) non-immigrant visas are now subject to increased scrutiny of their social media activity, a move that stems from earlier efforts under the Trump administration to bolster national security through digital background checks.
Last month, the news about the $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas created havoc. The new H-1B rule, effective September 21, 2025, to September 20, 2026 imposes a $100,000 employer fee on companies hiring non-U.S. residents directly from overseas. Its stated intent is to curb misuse of the visa by large outsourcing firms, not to penalise international students or limit skilled immigration. Many argue that this creates more opportunities for Indians aspiring to study in the U.S.
Meanwhile, countries like Germany, Japan, China, and others are emerging as new study abroad destinations. The Japanese government has announced several measures to facilitate Indians studying and working in Japan. The Chinese government has introduced the K visa that dispenses with the requirement of employee sponsorship to work in China.
Despite these new developments, the U.S.’ prestigious universities, cutting-edge research opportunities, and diverse academic programs offer unparalleled value for students looking to broaden their global perspective and invest in their future. This year, far fewer student visas have reportedly been given out. Yet, in the QS World University Rankings 2025, the U.S. has 36 universities in the top 100, significantly outperforming any other country.
