Global resistance materials producer Kanthal has inaugurated a new wire manufacturing facility in its existing Hosur plant in India. The new 1,980 sq m expansion will help Kanthal more than triple its production capacity at the Hosur plant, and will cater to the growing domestic market for industrial heating and resistance materials. In terms of exports, the expansion in Hosur will enable the unit to sell more to Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Korea, Japan, and China, and select parts of Europe.

Core offering

Sweden-based Kanthal is a global supplier of products for industrial heating technology and resistance materials with fine dimension wire being one of the core offerings. In 1988, Kanthal established its operation in Hosur. Since then, the company’s activities in the country have expanded; today, India is one of its key manufacturing hub.

“India is an important market for us and one of the fastest growing economy,” Robert Stal, President , Kanthal, said. We are seeing an increased local demand for our products and this along with the Make in India push are drivers for the expansion, he added.

Even our customers outside of India are today looking at establishing manufacturing footprint here, he said. The growth of electronics, semiconductors, electric vehicles, and renewable energy segments in India and larger Asia region is driving expansion of Kanthal’s manufacturing, he noted.

Without disclosing the exact investment, Stal noted that it includes the cost to build the new facility, high-tech equipment for wire production and also investments into increasing the automation levels in the factory. Our site in Hosur is around 20,000 sq m and we’ve now put up a new facility of around 2,000 sq m, he added.

On the geopolitical scenario, Stal says that Kanthal is well represented across the major economic regions of Asia, Europe and North America with their manufacturing footprints and customer base. “From that perspective, we have good resilience,” he said.

As per Kanthal, the new production line includes advanced automated processes and will enable end-to-end capability for appliance wire production, advanced die maintenance, and fully automated spooling operations.
