Tata Trusts board is set to meet on November 11 when the board will take note of the rejection of the proposal to reappoint Mehli Mistry as a trustee, discuss the fallout from it and chart out the future course of action, said sources.

The board meeting has particular significance. With the voting out of Mistry, the battle lines are clearly drawn between those ranged behind Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and those who support Mistry.

Mistry’s term as trustee came to an end on October 28 when three trustees, including Tata, voted against the resolution for his reappointment.

Sources aware of developments said that Tata intends to send out a clear message to those supporting Mistry that they would have to fall in line or face a similar fate. He would also be moving swiftly to find a replacement for Mistry, and according to sources, some candidates had already been identified.

There was no response to an e-mail sent to the office of Noel Tata for clarification.

Tough stance

The tough stance adopted by Tata in ousting Mistry comes in the wake of the nudge from the government to end the squabbling among the trustees. Tata Trusts owns 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the group, some companies of which are involved in critical sectors of the economy.

Tata Trusts also has to intimate the Charity Commissioner about the removal of Mistry, as they are public charitable trusts falling under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act, 1950, which provides oversight by the Charity Commissioner.

Under this law, any change in the composition of trustees must be reported to the Charity Commissioner through a “change report”.
