Tate McRae at the VMAs 2025 led the pack of ladies in sheer dresses on the red carpet, proving that the trend isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s actually getting chicer as time goes on.

The singer arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards show on Sunday night in a custom look by Ludovic de Saint Sernin that is giving the red-carpet version of pool-party day at your bachelorette party.

Tate McRae’s VMAs dress was complemented with glam by makeup artist Lilly Keys, who worked with Neutrogena products to give McRae a glowy and sun-kissed look.

“My vision was sun-kissed ’90s supermodel vibes with soft brows, radiant skin, and that lived-in glow,” said Keys in a press release. The look was rounded out by applying Lilly Lashes Sheer Band Inviting Half Lash to the singer’s eyes and styling her hair down and tousled with a classic middle part.

Of course, McRae wasn’t the only girlie to hop on the sheer-dress bandwagon for the awards show. As we all know, celebs have been pushing the envelope of the trend on the carpet for the past few years, and the 2025 VMAs were no exception.

Nikki Glaser went the polar opposite of McRae in her black sheer ensemble, though she similarly wore her hair simple and natural. If the looks seem complementary, that’s because Glaser’s dress is also by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, with a Victoria’s Secret black stretch cotton V-string underneath.

And Olandria Carthen, one of the breakout stars from this year’s Love Island USA, had her sheer moment in fire-engine red. The reality star’s eye-popping strapless sheer dress was by Cheney Chan.

What these looks prove is that you can do whatever you want with the sheer trend—as long as the end result is sexy, chic, and of course, translucent.
