If you love BLTs, make this easy appetizer part of your next party menu. The key is a special cheese that does double duty in the tastiest way possible.
The combination of bacon, lettuce and tomato is nothing short of magical. There’s the salty bacon balanced with crisp lettuce and rounded out with the delicate sweetness of a ripe tomato. But the classic sandwich isn’t the only way to enjoy it; BLT recipes can come in the form of pizzas, salads or even dips. While recently browsing the aisles of Aldi, I stumbled upon an ingredient that has become a new staple in my grocery cart: bacon bread cheese.
Bread cheese is a unique type of cheese, originally from Finland. It’s firm with a toasted outer layer, and it can be used in a variety of warm and cold preparations. And when looking for a BLT fix, this one genius ingredient functions as both the “bread” and the bacon elements in a three-ingredient, easy-to-prep appetizer.
How to Make a Three-Ingredient BLT Bread Cheese Appetizer
Ingredients
Kristina Vanni for Taste of Home
- Bacon bread cheese: Bacon bread cheese comes in 6-ounce packages in the refrigerator section at Aldi for $3.99.
- Cherry tomatoes: I like to slice cherry tomatoes in half, so you’ll need about eight cherry tomatoes to make 16 appetizer skewers.
- Lettuce: I picked up a vibrant green curly leaf lettuce for this appetizer.
Directions
Step 1: Cut the bread cheese
Cut the bacon bread cheese into cubes. (I got 16 cubes from the 6-ounce block of bread cheese at Aldi.) Slice the cherry tomatoes in half and tear off bite-sized pieces of lettuce.
Step 2: Assemble the skewers

Thread a tomato slice, a piece of lettuce and a cube of cheese onto appetizer skewers or toothpicks.

What can I serve with bread cheese appetizers?
These BLT appetizers can be served any time of year, but they’re particularly good in the summer months when tomatoes are in peak season. They’re a great way to kick off a backyard barbecue with a small bite that your guests might have never tried before. Pair the bites with an ice-cold beer—I’d go with an American lager or pilsner. If wine is more your style, you can’t go wrong with a chardonnay.
Can I make BLT bread cheese appetizers ahead of time?
One of the most appealing aspects of bread cheese is that it’s hearty enough to be left out at room temperature during a party, so you don’t have to worry about keeping these appetizers chilled during your get-together. If you want to assemble these BLT skewers in advance, you can store them in the fridge until you are ready to serve. But they come together so quickly, you may just choose to easily whip them up on the fly!
