This Is the Hot Dog Hack You Didn’t Know You Needed

Published on Jul. 18, 2025

Time to level-up your summertime staple.

Nothing says summer quite like a hot dog. It’s the perfect food to eat during any of your favorite summer activities, like grilling out, sitting poolside, watching a baseball game and watching Love Island—all made better with a hot dog in hand. I would know, because I did all of this very important research myself.

The hot dog hacks and recipes in this country know no limit. In Chicago, we don’t put ketchup on our hot dogs (kids get a pass, but I guarantee it’s not without a small wince of judgment). In New York, Coney dogs are topped with meat sauce, mustard and onions. And Seattle dwellers put cream cheese on their hot dogs. The first time I saw it on a menu, I did a double-take. Then I ordered it, and it was phenomenal. Way to go, Seattle!

There are endless ways to enjoy a hot dog, and one of the best ways to experiment is by changing the kind of bun you use. Whether it’s brioche, steamed or covered in poppy seeds, the bun is an essential component to this meal. So, when I saw this hot dog hack online, I knew I had to tell you about it.

What is the viral hot dog bun hack?

Like all good hacks, the genius of the viral hot dog bun hack lies in its simplicity. All you need is three Hawaiian rolls, a knife and a dream. Hawaiian rolls are soft and sweet, which makes them a great option for hot dogs. They have a slightly similar texture and flavor profile to brioche buns, just without the egg. Since Hawaiian rolls are sold fused together in a package, you’ll need to keep them together in rows of three for this hack.

The jury is split (ha) on how best to split the buns. Some will slice into the buns horizontally (the way you you split the buns normally if they were being used for sliders). And if you feel like it, you could technically break apart the buns and make little hot dog sliders with cut-up hot dogs.

But the most compelling way, in my opinion, is to split the buns in half vertically. This means that you slice into the tops of all three buns, layer your hot dog and toppings inside. The vertical slice method provides plenty of padding for your dog, and ensures that the buns stay together while you eat it. It’s also a really great way to load up on lots of toppings.

No matter how you slice it, this is guaranteed to be a people pleaser at your next potluck or get-together. Please invite me, because I’ll never say no to a hot dog!
