US President Donald Trump accusing Canada of using a ‘FAKE’ advertisement featuring his predecessor Ronald Reagan criticising tariffs cancelled trade negotiations with US’ northern neighbour.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, a social media platform he owns.

The ad was posted by Ontario Premier Doug Ford on X and it begins with Reagan saying: “When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs, and sometimes for a short while it works, but only for a short time. But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer”.
The ad also ran during a sporting event. Ontario ran the ad during a game in the American League Championship Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners. US broadcaster Fox Sports, which broadcasted the game, said more than 9 million people were watching.
According to another report by US broadcaster NBC News, the Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said Thursday that it was “reviewing its legal options” over the use of Reagan’s address.
“The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks,” it said.

Trump in his post said that tariffs are important for the US economy and US national security.
“The ad was for $75,000,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts. TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” he added in his post.
Trump’s decision to end trade negotiations with Canada on Thursday marks another breakdown in ties between the two neighbors.
In June, he had similarly declared he was “terminating ALL discussions on trade with Canada,” accusing Ottawa of unfair treatment toward American tech companies and dairy farmers.
Canada responded by imposing quotas on steel imports, a move Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said was meant to counter “unjust US tariffs.”
But tensions eased weeks later after Canada announced it would withdraw its planned digital services tax, which had targeted major U.S. firms. The rollback was seen as a gesture to de-escalate tensions with Washington.
In early October, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the White House, where both sides appeared to make peace. Standing beside Carney in the Oval Office, Trump spoke of the “mutual love” between the United States and Canada.
Still, he hinted that disagreements could resurface. “We want Canada to do great,” he said. “But you know, there’s a point at which we also want the same business.”
