Two infiltrators killed in north Kashmir’s Keran sector

Security forces on Sunday foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Keran sector, killing at least two terrorists, officials said.

Troops observed suspicious movement near the frontier and challenged the infiltrators, triggering a brief exchange of fire, the officials said.

Two intruders were believed to have been killed, but their bodies had not yet been recovered.

It was the second infiltration attempt thwarted by security forces this month and came amid what officials described as a seasonal increase in such incidents before the onset of winter, when snow blocks mountain passes.

Earlier on Sept. 1, troops foiled an infiltration bid in Poonch district. So far this month, four terrorists and three soldiers have been killed in four separate encounters across Jammu and Kashmir.

On Sept. 8, two terrorists and two soldiers were killed in a gun battle in the Guddar forest of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district after a massive search operation.

On Sept. 21, one soldier was killed in fighting with terrorist in Seoj Dhar forest in the Dudu-Basantgarh area of Jammu’s Udhampur district.

Terrorists  groups operating from across the LoC typically step up attempts to push fighters across the LoC ahead of winter, when heavy snow seals infiltration routes in the high-altitude passes of the Pir Panjal and other mountain ranges.

Security forces  have intensified patrols and search operations in border areas to intercept them.

On Saturday, Inspector General of BSF Kashmir Frontier Ashok Yadav said infiltration attempts typically rise before winter as heavy snowfall blocks mountain passes. “Militants try to cross in these two months, knowing they will have fewer chances for the next six,” he said, adding that the vigilance of security forces makes infiltration difficult.
