According to BBC, around 2,000 women and 3,000 men took part separately in the marathon on Kish Island off the southern coast of Iran.

After images of some women competitors not wearing hijab or any other head covering went viral, BBC quoted the prosecutor in Kish saying the race was being held was in itself a “violation of public decency”.

“Two of the main organisers of the competition were arrested on warrants,” the judiciary’s Mizan news website reported on Saturday.

“One of those arrested is an official in the Kish free zone, and the other works for the private company that organised the race,” it added.

“Despite previous warnings regarding the need to comply with the country’s current laws and regulations, as well as religious, customary and professional principles … the event was held in a way that violated public decency,” the local prosecutor said. “Considering the violations that occurred and based on the laws and regulations, a criminal case has been filed against the officials and agents organising this event.”

The judiciary said a criminal case was opened against the organisers of the race.

Meanwhile, many supporters of change in Iran have lauded the images saying it was further an evidence of Iranian women rejecting restrictions on what women can wear.
