The United Kingdom Police on Saturday (local time) said that they are treating the case of the alleged rape of a British Sikh woman as a “racially aggravated assault.”

“We’re investigating after a woman reported to us that she had been raped in Oldbury in what we are treating as a racially aggravated attack,” West Midlands Police said in a statement.

The Police have also appealed for anyone in the area who may have seen the accused men to contact the force.

“We are working really hard to identify those responsible, with CCTV, forensic and other enquiries well underway. We fully understand the anger and worry that this has caused, and I am speaking to people in the community today to reassure them that we are doing everything we can to identify and arrest those responsible,” Chief Superintendent Kim Madill said as quoted by Skynews.

A Sikh woman in her twenties was raped by two men in Oldbury, in the Sandwell area of the West Midlands region of England. The police said that they were informed about the crime on Tuesday morning (local time)

According to the Police, the woman reported that the miscreants hurled racist remarks like “go back to your country” during the assault. Detectives are examining CCTV footage and forensic evidence to track down the suspects.

Local media described the attackers as white men — one with a shaved head wearing a dark sweatshirt, and the other dressed in a grey top.

The local MP for Smethwick, Gurinder Singh Josan, said the “truly horrific attack” had left the victim traumatised and appealed for anyone with information to assist the police in investigating the “hate crime”.

“I am reassured Sandwell police are doing everything they possibly can to find the perpetrators. The incident is being treated as a hate crime,” Josan said.

Birmingham MP Preet Kaur Gill strongly condemned the assault, calling the rise of “overt racism” in the UK deeply troubling.

“This was an act of extreme violence and racially aggravated abuse. She does belong here. Every community has the right to feel safe, respected, and valued. Racism and misogyny have no place in Oldbury or anywhere in Britain,” Gill said.
