ULTIMATE TRAIL COMFORT: MR. KNOW-IT-ALL

Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
My friends call me “Movie Magic” Aaron, and my fiancé said it was okay, so I just picked up a 2025 KTM 300XC-W two-stroke, and I’m hitting singletrack trails here in Oregon that have rocks, roots and logs. You know, all the gnarly stuff with my riding buddies “Ouchy” TJ and “Dual-Sport” Daryl. This is the first time I have owned an off-road-specific two-stroke model, so I am a little out of my element here. I love the new bike, but the stock suspension is beating me up, and I just don’t have confidence in my setup like I have in the past with my other trail machines. What can I do to make the ride more compliant, confidence-inspiring and add some additional rider comfort? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Movie Magic, congrats on scoring the fresh 300 two-smoker, a singletrack shredder if there ever was one! The crew at Slavens Racing sets up trail machines like yours for this exact application all the time, so we asked Alec Morefield to point us in the right direction. Working in steps and covering all the bases is the best way to tackle a suspension issue were the first words out of his mouth. Here are the steps they go by, according to Alec:

STEP 1: Get The Correct Spring Rate

Start with proper spring rates for your weight and always do both ends. Swapping just the shock spring or fork springs alone throws your bike’s balance off, making it handle like a shopping cart with one bad wheel. Your bike WP XACT closed-cartridge forks and PDS rear shock are adjustable, but stock springs often mismatch your weight or riding style. At Slavens, our spring rate chart nails the perfect setup—whether you’re 150 or 250 pounds with gear, we’ve got the right springs for your ride. If the charts don’t do it for you, you can always give us a call.

Proper springs let the suspension ride appropriately in the stroke. They keep the bike more balanced under braking and from getting out from under you when you’re on the bike.

STEP 2: Kick it Up With K-Tech

Want more than springs? Kick it up a notch with K-Tech fork piston and shock piston kits available at Slavens. The stock WP setup struggles with low-speed impacts like roots and can fade in rocky sections. K-Tech’s piston kits improve damping, making the suspension smoother over chatter and more controlled on big hits like logs.

The fork piston kit boosts mid-stroke support, preventing dive on steep descents, while the shock piston kit enhances traction, keeping your rear wheel hooked up over roots. This affordable combo delivers a predictable ride, letting you charge technical terrain with confidence. We supply the K-Tech kits at Slavens. We highly recommend having the K-Tech kits installed by a suspension expert with the specialized tools and experience needed.

STEP 3: The Mack Daddy Setup

For the ultimate setup, go all in with MX-Tech, the mack daddy of suspension upgrades. MX-Tech offers drop-in fork cartridges, complete fork assemblies, and the National shock, a full rear-shock replacement. Their fork cartridges or assemblies with our Slavens Mule valving provide plush initial travel for small bumps and progressive damping for big hits, transforming your WP forks into trail-taming beasts. The Slavens Mule National shock with their Huck valve delivers unreal traction and control, letting you crawl logs or blast rock gardens without getting your butt kicked.

This is pro-level, top-of-the-line gear that totally transforms your ride. MX-Tech’s precision paired with Slavens’ Mule valving makes every adjustment count, and we have them set up for you out of the box for your skill and terrain. It’s an investment, but for confidence and comfort in the gnarliest conditions, nothing beats it. We’ve got the full MX-Tech lineup at Slavens.

WRAP IT UP: The Slavens Racing Takeaway

Start with springs for both ends matched to your weight using our spring rate chart. Maintain regular suspension service. For more compliance, grab K-Tech piston kits. For the ultimate ride, Slavens Mule MX-Tech cartridges or fork assemblies and National shock are unbeatable. Slavens Racing has all the suspension upgrade parts to make you ride more compliant and confidence-inspiring.
