‘No chances of cross-voting, NDA will win,’ says BJP MP Bhagwat Karad on Vice Presidential election

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bhagwat Karad on Tuesday asserted that there was “no chance” of cross-voting against the NDA’s vice presidential nominee, CP Radhakrishnan.

“There are no chances of cross-voting. We will win the Vice-President elections for sure,” Karad told ANI.

Backing him, Rajya Sabha MP Ujjwal Nikam accused the Opposition of “bogus propaganda” and expressed confidence in Radhakrishnan’s victory. “NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan will win the Vice Presidential election. The opposition is adopting a strategy of bogus propaganda, in which they will fail,” Nikam said.

Earlier in the day, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu expressed strong confidence in the victory of the NDA candidate, predicting that the ruling coalition will secure a large majority.

“The main strategy is that we, all 18 MPs, want to finish our voting within the first hour. Everyone is prepared for that. Arrive early and vote early. I am not only confident that our NDA candidate will win, but I am also confident that he will get more than 80-100 majority in this election. There will definitely be cross-voting from the parties that are in between; they will be voting for us. Also, some of the Opposition MPs will be voting for us,” he told ANI.

BJP MP Gulam Ali Khatana added that Radhakrishnan’s experience would strengthen parliamentary democracy. “I appeal to the Opposition to support the NDA candidate and encourage parliamentary conventions, deliberations and debates,” he said.

Polling for the 15th Vice Presidential election began on Tuesday morning, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi exercising his franchise first, along with other prominent ministers and MPs. The counting of votes will take place in the evening.

NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan is facing joint Opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy.

The election comes 50 days after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post as the Vice President on July 21, citing health reasons.

‘More than hopeful…’: INDIA bloc nominee B Sudershan Reddy on winning VP elections

Joint Opposition Vice Presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy has expressed hope about winning the elections that commenced on Tuesday morning in Parliament House.

“I am more than hopeful that I am going to win this election,” Reddy told reporters here.

“I thank the people for the love I have got from, the response from civil society. I also thank the leaders on the opposing side,” he added.

Reddy also dismissed any hopes of cross-voting, saying that he is only trying to “awaken people’s conscious” and he does not expect any cross voting to happen.

“I am only trying to awaken people’s conscience. I did not say that there would be cross-voting. I don’t know what cross-voting is,” he said.

When asked on NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan being confident in winning majority of votes, he retorted, “What else will he say? Will he say that I (Sudershan Reddy) will win? Is this a question?”

BJP quickly removed a vice president, and now everyone faces pressure to vote: Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury

On Vice-Presidential Election 2025, Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury said, “We must understand why this situation arose. BJP quickly removed a vice president, and now everyone faces pressure to vote. I don’t want to talk about other parties, but I will definitely speak about BRS. For Telugu speakers, this is a crucial issue and opportunity. A man from the south, who served for Telangana for his whole life and made important decisions as a Supreme Court judge, is it not shameful that BRS wouldn’t vote for a Telugu man? Are their intentions pure?… Whether BRS votes for them or not, it won’t make a difference because they (BJP and BRS) are linked with each other… BRS say one thing in Telangana and does something else when in Delhi. They do the same thing repeatedly in many bills and elections… Our candidate is a very good person. Morally, we will win…”

Vice President Election 2025: Choosing the second-highest constitutional office

The vice-presidential election holds immense importance as it fills the second-highest constitutional office and determines the Rajya Sabha chairman. With the NDA holding a numerical edge, political strategists see a likely Radhakrishnan victory, but the opposition stresses the moral imperative of voting according to conscience. The secret ballot, abstentions by some MPs, and careful campaign efforts make the contest closely watched. The results, expected late evening, will not only decide the officeholder but also signal the relative strength of alliances, the role of unaligned MPs, and ideological positioning ahead of future parliamentary dynamics.

NDA parties, MPs are ready for VP election tomorrow, we will participate in it positively. The next session will be held under CP Radhakrishnan. We are hopeful for tomorrow.

VP Polls 2025 Live: Role of unaligned MPs could influence election dynamics

Apart from the main NDA and opposition blocs, 39 MPs remain unaligned, making their votes potentially decisive in close contests. While YSR Congress has pledged support to Radhakrishnan, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi has announced backing for Reddy. Parties like BRS and BJD will abstain, and the SAD has also chosen not to participate. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed confidence that most unaligned MPs will support the NDA candidate. Their choices, though numerically smaller, carry symbolic weight and could shape narratives about cross-party appeal, strategic negotiations, and the perceived legitimacy of the winning candidate in the upper house.

Vice President Election 2025 Live Updates: Voting for the vice-presidential election began on Tuesday at 10 am, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi casting the first ballot.

On Monday, Prime Minister Modi expressed that the candidature of CP Radhakrishnan had generated widespread enthusiasm and said people believed he would make an excellent Vice President. “Participated in the NDA meeting in Delhi, attended by MPs across the NDA family. The candidature of Thiru CP Radhakrishnan has generated immense enthusiasm all across. People believe that he will be an excellent Vice President, who will enrich the office with his wisdom and insights,” he said in a post on X.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also voiced confidence in Radhakrishnan’s support, saying the NDA nominee is likely to receive more votes than the ruling alliance’s strength. “There will be secret voting. CP Radhakrishnanji will get more support from the MPs than the votes from the NDA. Many MPs are thinking of voting for Radhakrishnan ji, and it is in the national interest that a very good person with nationalist ideology becomes the Vice President of our country,” he told mediapersons.

Rijiju emphasized the importance of every vote, noting past instances of invalid ballots. “So last time we have seen few invalid votes. The Prime Minister has appealed that not a single vote should be invalid or go to waste. All MPs are very particular about their voting rights,” he said.

Ahead of the election, PM Modi addressed NDA MPs in a meeting, discussing recent parliamentary achievements and urging them to spread awareness about key bills. “It was a very good meeting. All MPs of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha met together, and PM Modi also guided them. Prime Minister expressed his happiness about the important bills that have been passed in the Parliament recently and also said that people should be informed about such important bills in the true sense… For a self-reliant India, NDA leaders have been called upon to play a leadership role,” he said.

Rijiju added that the Prime Minister’s guidance would be carried forward by MPs in their constituencies following the Vice Presidential election.
