Folk Celebrations in Full Swing
In Jagdalpur village of Binika in Sonepur district, the atmosphere was particularly festive. Artists filled the streets with joy, dancing and singing to the beats of folk instruments. Communities across towns and villages joined in the celebration, proudly showcasing the vibrant cultural identity of Western Odisha.
Bohidar’s Legacy Beyond Fabric
Sambalpuri Din commemorates the legacy of Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar, widely regarded as the pioneer of the Sambalpuri language and grammar. Born on August 1, 1913, in Sonepur, then part of undivided Sambalpur, Bohidar dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the Sambalpuri dialect.
Through his literary contributions, including biographies and translations, he provided the language with a structured identity. His efforts helped elevate Sambalpuri from being associated solely with its famous handwoven fabric to a recognised regional language rich in culture, tradition, and literary depth.
Cultural Identity Takes Centre Stage
Thanks to Bohidar’s enduring legacy, Sambalpuri today stands as more than just a textile design; it is a symbol of Western Odisha’s linguistic and cultural pride. Sambalpuri Din continues to grow as a unifying celebration of this heritage, drawing communities together in remembrance and joy.
