Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani invoked India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as he addressed supporters following his historic win. Standing before a cheering crowd, Zohran Mamdani said, “Standing before you, I’m reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words: ‘A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.’ Tonight, New York has done just that.”

The 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist- now the city’s 111th mayor and its first Muslim leader- said New York was entering “a new era” that demanded “clarity, courage and vision- not excuses.”

In his speech, which lasted less than 30 minutes, Zohran Mamdani reiterated many of his campaign pledges- from free buses and universal childcare to tackling soaring rents- promising to make the city more affordable for working families. He also vowed to deliver for the diverse groups that powered his campaign, including “Yemeni bodega owners, Senegalese taxi drivers, Uzbek nurses and Ethiopian aunties.”

Hopeful yet defiant, Zohran Mamdani told supporters, “In this moment of darkness, New York will be the light.” He also took aim at US President Donald Trump, saying the city that “gave rise to him” could “defeat him.”

Concluding with a message of unity and resolve, Zohran Mamdani said, “We are breathing in the air of a city that has been reborn. Now we will have to deliver.”
